Women and people of color are significantly underrepresented in STEM careers and in the pathways that lead to those careers. I fiercely believe that we will close that gap.”

— Abigail Harrison

MINNEAPOLIS , MN, UNITED STATES , February 29, 2020 / — The Mars Generation (TMG) today announced that its co-founder, Abigail Harrison, will join Microsoft and NASA at an event at the Museum of Flight in Seattle on March 2, focused on making science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) opportunities accessible to all. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station, including Jessica Meir, will join via a live In-Flight Education Downlink to share their experiences of working and living in space, and to answer questions from attendees. The downlink for the event will be live streamed online for public viewing. Microsoft and NASA are hosting this event in response to the anticipated 9 million STEM jobs that will be created by 2022, and the desire to see women and minorities accessing those jobs.

The event will kick off Microsoft’s In Culture campaign to honor International Women’s Day on March 8th, and throughout Women’s History Month by recognizing women who are overcoming obstacles and breaking boundaries—with the goal of encouraging young women and girls to pursue their goals without giving up. Harrison, known online as Astronaut Abby, is a leader in STEM who inspires the future by encouraging people of all backgrounds to pursue big dreams.

“Women and people of color are significantly underrepresented in STEM careers and in the pathways that lead to those careers,” said Harrison. “I fiercely believe that we will close that gap, and I am thrilled to be a part of the movement that will do it. Giving young people access to people like astronaut Jessica Meir and the information that she’ll share during this event, can help keep their minds open to the possibilities of what they can do themselves.”

Microsoft is sponsoring Harrison’s attendance at the event as she is known for using her leadership and widespread global influence to increase focus on space exploration as vital to the future of humankind. She has also been vocal about the need for people of all backgrounds to have a seat at the table, and advocates tirelessly for the importance of diverse perspectives being represented in STEM and beyond.

FIRST Major Protest of Toyota and President Trump’s Environmental Policies to Be Held Saturday in Lemon Grove

LEMON GROVE, CA, UNITED STATES, February 29, 2020 / — For Immediate Release

Major Protest of Toyota and President Trump’s Environmental Policies to Be Held Saturday in Lemon Grove

Action organized by Activist San Diego with help from SanDiego350

(LEMON GROVE) – This Saturday at 9:30 a.m., activists will be in Lemon Grove to protest Toyota’s lawsuit against California, which will roll back auto emissions and public health standards. Toyota and other automakers filed the suit to support the Trump Administration's attack on California’s environmental and public health laws.

This action is aimed to highlight Toyota’s public duplicity. Toyota has long positioned itself as the environmental car company with products like the Prius and Rav 4 hybrids. But the lawsuit shows when push comes to shove, Toyota Loves Trump. As Toyota dealerships prepare for their annual Spring sales, we are going to inform potential customers that their dollars will be used to fund anti-California rules that will have a disastrous effect on our environment and public health.

We have selected Lemon Grove as our first action because it is a diverse, working class community, and one that will be disproportionately impacted by any environmental or public health rollback.

For those who wish to join the protest, please contact Activist San Diego Board Member John Sepulvado at 619 439 8342 or email him at You can also learn about the action by going to

For members of the media, we will have spokespeople who can convey our concerns to your audience. There will be many photo and audio opportunities. These include large signs, fliers, fact sheets, and a brass quintet that will play funeral songs outside of the Larry Miller Toyota dealership to mourn the loss of Toyota’s environmental bonafides.

The action will last about an hour and a half, and will culminate with the delivery of a letter urging Larry Miller to tell Toyota to drop the suit. This will be the second letter we will have delivered to the dealership. We will continue to protest Larry Miller until they respond to our request, as well as other Toyota dealerships in San Diego County.

A rundown of the information is available below:

Where: We’re meeting at 7065 Broadway, Lemon Grove CA 91942

When: Meet at 9:30 am Saturday – March begins at 10 am to Larry Miller Toyota, located on the corner of Broadway and College in Lemon Grove.

Who: Anyone who cares about our environment and opposes Trump’s disastrous policies.

Why: Because if Toyota and Trump won’t stand for a better environment, we will.

America: Rome is Safe and Open for Business

Coronavirus has been deadly but the effects of media-induced hysteria surrounding it, has been more devastating to the tourism sector of the Italian economy.

ROME, RM, ITALY, February 29, 2020 / — ROME — Information is critical to a free society but misinformation, when spread rapidly, can also have dire consequences. The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been deadly but the effects of media-induced hysteria surrounding it, in some respects, has been even more devastating – especially to the tourism sector which is vital to the Italian economy. However, the fact remains, Rome, as a destination, is safe and remains open for business.

Rome mayor Virginia Raggi and Lazio Region president Nicola Zingaretti have both stressed the fact that there is no Coronavirus emergency in the capital city of Italy. Yet the sharp rise in tourist cancellations and drop in bookings has occurred – despite the fact that there is no Coronavirus emergency in Rome according to Raggi.

While the Coronavirus virus has mainly been concentrated in the north near Milan, it’s Rome's tourist industry that has suffered the most.

“This is the first time in the 30-years since I have been in the travel industry, where Americans have canceled tours like this because of fear from a virus. Yet the rest of the world, while in lesser quantities, still continues to book tours here for the upcoming season,” says, Therese Billman, manager, Romaround Tours.

Bookings are also down 60-70 percent in March and April with bookings "sharply down" up to June, according to trade associations Assoturismo Confesercenti Roma e Lazio and Fiavet Lazio

Roberto Paolini, tour guide with Rome Live Tours, says, “We have seen a decline in American tourists as of the last week here at the Coloseo but it’s Rome … people are resilient – they are still enjoying their wine and food in outdoor cafes and restaurants and enjoying our beautiful, historic city as always.”

However, the effect of cancelled hotel reservations, coupled with numerous cancelled events, has so far led to the loss of €1.5 billion to the tourism sector in Rome and Lazio, according to Stefano Fiori, president of the tourism section of Unindustria, quoted in Corriere della Sera.

“Some US-based news reporting has been misleading regarding the Coronavirus in Rome and that has caused confusion – which has led to would-be tourists canceling their travel plans. Rome now has zero active Coronavirus cases and of the three mild cases confirmed, all have fully recovered. It’s time for potential visitors to be assured that Rome is safe and still a great place to visit today,” says Scott Spinucci, a media communications veteran of the United States, and now a spokesman for Rome-based 7 Hills Tours.

Italian economic minister, Dario Franceschini, announced today that he is hopeful domestic tourism will resume and will work to return international tourism flow (to seasonal norms).

According to data reported by 2019, travel and tourism contributed 237.8 billion euros to the Italian gross domestic product (GDP).

Safcoin, Africa's own cryptocurrency launches Africa’s first blockchain-powered freelance jobs marketplace

SAFCOIN, Africa's own crypto, has launched Africa’s first blockchain-powered micro jobs platform, connecting businesses and workers across Africa, for free.

MOSSEL BAY, WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA, February 29, 2020 / — SAFCOIN launches Africa’s first blockchain-powered freelance jobs marketplace MobiJobs.Africa connects gig workers and businesses across Africa, for free.

SAFCOIN, an exclusive African cryptocurrency, has launched Africa’s first blockchain-powered micro jobs platform, aimed at connecting businesses and gig economy workers across Africa, for free.

MobiJobs.Africa lets start-ups and small to medium-sized businesses list jobs, search freelancer profiles, and establish an online presence without set-up, hosting, or development costs. It also lets freelancers market their skills, build their experience, and “buy” listed jobs, even if they don’t have a bank account. There are no joining, account, or transaction fees, and jobs are paid for in SAFCOIN cryptocurrency.

Youth empowerment

In the fourth quarter of 2019, over 40% of South Africa’s youth, aged between 15 and 34, were unemployed, and 13.4 million youth in Africa do not have jobs.

Now, technology is enabling the growth of the freelance, or “gig” economy, with more people taking on short-term, flexible tasks to make money. In South Africa, 3.9 million people were in temporary employment in 2018, up from 2.6 million in 2017. In Africa, nearly 86% of employment is informal.

MobiJobs aims to empower more Africans to access global work opportunities, grow their experience, and sell their skills and talent online. All they need is a mobile phone or laptop and connectivity.

Digitally and financially empowered

Jobseekers in Africa have, until now, been restricted from participating in digital shared labour platforms like MobiJobs because they had little or no access to bank accounts. In fact, around 1.7 billion, or 62% of sub-Saharan Africans, are unbanked.

Those that do have bank accounts pay high transaction, pay-out, and commission fees, which eats into their freelance earnings.

MobiJobs uses blockchain technology to eliminate banking fees. Powered by SAFCOIN cryptocurrency, it facilitates an easy, secure payment process between individuals and businesses through the SAFPay gateway. Payment is secured before the service provider begins the job, and is released once the job is marked as completed.

Through the MobiJobs Workdesk, freelancers can manage their jobs, advertise their skills, communicate with clients, and rate their experience.

Neil Ferreira, CEO of SAFCOIN, says: “Our goal with MobiJobs is to help individuals in Africa to take their skills and talents global, and to empower small businesses to tap into a global skills pool, as and when they need to. Through the platform, users can gain experience, build their internship hours while studying, ask for testimonials from businesses they’ve completed tasks for, and build relationships with companies across Africa. All this via a free cryptocurrency payment gateway that ensures they get paid quickly and securely, with zero transaction charges.”

Taking Africa into the Fourth Industrial Revolution

The Fourth Industrial Revolution has resulted in thousands of job losses as technology increasingly takes on roles traditionally performed by humans. But the benefit is that the same technology that drives this revolution can also empower individuals to access a global jobs marketplace and opportunities in less-penetrated e-commerce markets.

MasterCard predicts that African e-commerce may generate over $500 billion a year by 2030, equivalent to nearly 10% of GDP, and the World Economic Forum says e-commerce will generate three million new jobs in Africa by 2025.

“Combining cryptocurrency and the blockchain with e-commerce is a huge breakthrough for the industry. Adoption of cryptocurrency across Africa is increasing steadily and usage is arguably the highest among emerging markets,” says Ferreira.

“Africa is evolving into the Fourth Industrial Revolution and we’re proud to be at the forefront, creating awareness, educating people, and connecting the youth and businesses through blockchain and cryptocurrency-powered platforms like SAFCOIN and MobiJobs.”

Click here to find out more about MobiJobs, and here to find out more about SAFCOIN.

SAFCOIN is a cryptocurrency founded by Africans, for Africans. Launched on 13 December 2018, following a successful ICO between July and October 2018, SAFCOIN is now available in South Africa, Botswana, Uganda, and Nigeria, for Fiat deposits, transactions, and withdrawals.

It aims to promote social and economic growth across the continent, by becoming the chosen source of trading currency across Africa, through e-commerce payments and remittances.

SAFCOIN supports a wide range of payment methods.

Cinequest will be from March 3 to March 15, 2020

Shannon Harvey had her dream job as a radio journalist at age 24 when she was diagnosed with a devastating auto-immune disease.

North American premiere of "My Year of Living Mindfully" chronicles Shannon Harvey's determination to find a treatment using techniques of mind-body medicine.

My Year of Living Mindfully is sure to inspire countless individuals to not only find their own inner strength and peace but also see the world in new ways.”

— My Year of Living Mindfully

SAN JOSE, CA, USA, February 29, 2020 / — Every year the Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival, in conjunction with Kaiser Permanente, honors one film for its life-affirming themes and resonance with the Kaiser Permanente Thrive Award. This year the award is being bestowed on "My Year of Living Mindfully."

Shannon Harvey had her dream job as a broadcast journalist at age 24 when she was diagnosed with a devastating auto-immune disease. Her immune system had become hyperactive and was attacking normal, healthy tissues. Her muscles and joints were inflamed and she was told if her disease continued to progress she could end up with organ failure, or wheelchair bound.

"My Year of Living Mindfully" chronicles her determination to find an effective treatment using the cutting-edge techniques of mind-body medicine. Cinequest will be its North American premiere.

Shannon wondered: is it really possible to ease suffering and promote physical and mental healing using the simple practice of meditation that can be done by anyone at any time or anywhere? The film follows Shannon’s worldwide journey from her home in Australia to Manhattan to the dusty refugee camps of the Middle East and then back Down Under.

She undertakes a year-long experiment with herself as the subject that synthesizes the works of leading scientists with the ways of mystics. Her goal is to learn if meditation can dramatically improve her health and well-being, or is it just another over-hyped self-help fad? "My Year of Living Mindfully" is sure to inspire countless individuals to not only find their own inner strength and peace but also see the world in new ways. It is a must-see for those seeking insight and questioning their place in the world.

Previous winners of the Kaiser Permanente Thrive Award have included such stirring films as Clownvets (2019), the inspiring story of legendary Dr. Patch Adams and his team’s trip to Guatemala on a mission of “humanitarian clowning” to help veterans suffering from PTSD; Pick of the Litter (2018), which follows the lives of a litter of Labrador Retriever puppies from birth through their training to be guide dogs for the blind; and The Bullish Farmer (2017), the story of a Wall Street investment banker who turned his back on high finance and transformed his life by becoming an organic farmer.

"My Year of Living Mindfully" director, producer and star Shannon Harvey is available for interviews and will receive the award at the Hammer Theatre in Downtown San Jose on March 5 at 7 p.m. after the North American Premiere screening of her film.

What Lies Beneath: the Mystery of Coronavirus and Shincheonji-phobia

Over 500 church members of Shincheonji (SCJ) tested positive for the virus and have become the target of scapegoating and blame.

NEW YORK, NY, USA, February 29, 2020 / — The rapid proliferation of the coronavirus (COVID-19) resulted in 13 deaths and 2,022 confirmed cases as of February 28 2020 in South Korea. While the cause and solution of the infection have not been identified, over 500 church members of Shincheonji (SCJ) tested positive for the virus and have become the target of scapegoating and blame.

On February 19, South Korean President Moon Jae-In stated that a full survey and diagnosis of Shincheonji members were necessary. On Feb 25, SCJ submitted a list of 210,000 members to health authorities with the condition the personal information of their members remain protected. On 26th, health authorities began telephone surveys and tests on those who showed symptoms.

Chosun Ilbo, a major newspaper in South Korea, reported that 5 people with pneumonia were found positive with the virus according to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters before any Shincheonji member was involved. The medical community noted that the COVID-19 cases had already proliferated before the mass infection of members of the church. This raises doubts on reports echoed by some Western media that patient 31, a female Shincheonji member, had been the main agent spreading the infection throughout the country.

The mass infections focused attention on the Shincheonji Church. Unfortunately, several media reports relied on low-level internet sources and interviews with Christians who regard Shincheonji as a serious competitor and have labeled it a cult.

“Shincheonji members generally do not recognize themselves in reports they read in the media. For instance, they do not regard their founder, Chairman Lee Man Hee, as the second coming of Jesus or as God. Publishing these claims without fact-checking shows media do not do their homework and only relied on bias sources,” said Mr. Kim Shin Chang, General Director of Department of International Relations of Shincheonji Headquarters.
Shincheonji Church is controversial in Korean society. This is mostly due to its rapid growth in the past decade which has occured the at the expense of the politically influential conservative and fundamentalist Christian churches in Korea. Shincheonji’s members exceeded 200,000 in 2018, and this spectacular growth contrasts with the gradual decrease of members in conservative and fundamentalist Christian groups in South Korea, which have been plagued by corruption scandals.

Another example of societal pressure against SCJ was covered by Munwha Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), a leading South Korean television. They reported on February 26th that a female Shincheonji member fell from a window of her house and died as a result of her husband’s violence. The husband tried to coerce her to leave Shincheonji. Before her death, the police received reports of domestic violence.

As confirmed in several reports by Belgian NGO Human Rights Without Frontiers (HRWF), Shincheonji members have been the main target of kidnapping and confinement promoted by pastors with the aim of compelling them to renounce their faith, called forced conversion or deprogramming, resulting in over 1,000 human rights violation cases.

When one of its members died during a coercive conversion attempt, Shincheonji reacted with protest of more than 120,000 Korean citizens in January 2018 to demand justice. The annual 2019 International Religious Freedom Report by the U.S. Department of State mentioned the incident. However, the Korean government did nothing.

“We are asked why we hide our identity or affiliation to Shincheonji. What is happening now with the virus outbreak clearly answers the question. When the fact that we belong to Shincheonji becomes known, we are forced to quit our jobs. We cannot send our kids to school. Vulnerable members are exposed to domestic violence. We fear the coronavirus, and we also fear the virus named hatred and insult.” states a member of Shincheonji.

Long-Serving Member of the NSS Board of Governors and Recipient of the Robert A. Heinlein and Gerard K. O’Neil Memorial Awards

We laud the enormous contributions Mr. Dyson made towards advancing humanity’s journey into space. He was an extraordinary dreamer and shaper of things to come…”

— Karlton Johnson, Chairman of the NSS Board of Governors

WASHINGTON, D.C., US, February 29, 2020 / — The National Space Society (NSS) mourns the loss of one of its own, Mr. Freeman Dyson. Dyson was an iconic figure in academia and the space profession, as well as a brilliant theoretical physicist, mathematician, and visionary. He passed away early on February 28 at the age of 96.

"Today, our profession has lost one of the most remarkable minds of all time”, said Karlton Johnson, Chairman of the NSS Board of Governors. “I grew up reading about Mr. Dyson as a young adult and had the opportunity to meet him at our 2018 International Space Development Conference® where he gave a remarkable keynote address. He was a long-standing member of our Board of Governors and we laud the enormous contributions he made towards advancing humanity’s journey into space. Mr. Dyson was an extraordinary dreamer and shaper of things to come, and although we are diminished by his passing, each of us was enriched by his presence.”

Dyson received a BA in mathematics from Trinity College, Cambridge, after World War II, and worked toward a Doctorate in physics at Cornell. He held a post at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton from 1953 to 1994 where he remained a professor emeritus. Dyson is best known for his numerous and significant contributions in the fields of physics and mathematics, including support for and practical use of Feynman diagrams, which illustrated the behavior of subatomic particles. He furthered the understanding of quantum electrodynamics by unifying the three previously existing versions of that theory.

Dyson was known for his vast intellect as well as his thought-provoking concepts and had the ability to see beyond the horizon towards “what could be,” and to produce ideas that were guaranteed to stimulate both debate and action. His concept of the Dyson Sphere, a theoretical superstructure crafted around a star to harness its raw power and support a population’s energy need for millennia, became a classic theme in science fiction and was referenced in several novels and the "Star Trek" television franchise.

Dyson is survived by his wife, Imme, six children, and numerous grandchildren.

The Robert A. Heinlein Memorial Award honored the work Mr. Dyson performed as a ground-breaking physicist, mathematician, and thought leader in the science and space communities for decades. The Gerard K. O’Neill Memorial Award is given at infrequent intervals to exceptional individuals, which aptly describes Freeman Dyson.

The National Space Society was formed by a merger of the National Space Institute, founded in 1974 by NASA’s Wernher von Braun, father of the Saturn V rocket, and the L5 Society, founded in 1975, inspired by the pioneering work of Princeton physicist Gerard K. O’Neill.
