Global Internet Users Reach Six Billion

(MENAFN) Over 240 million people joined the online world in 2025, increasing the total number of internet users worldwide to six billion, according to a new report released Monday by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

While the figures indicate steady advancement in global connectivity, the UN agency cautioned in a statement that ongoing inequalities in service quality, affordability, and digital skills are preventing billions from fully taking advantage of online technologies.

Despite these improvements, the ITU estimated that approximately 2.2 billion people still remain offline, the majority residing in low- and middle-income nations.

The report emphasized the importance of stronger digital infrastructure, cost-effective services, and enhanced digital literacy, especially as technologies like artificial intelligence become increasingly integrated into everyday life.

"In a world where digital technologies are essential to so much of daily life, everyone should have the opportunity to benefit from being online," said ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin.

She highlighted that today’s digital divides are shaped not only by access but also by factors such as speed, reliability, affordability, and skills.

The analysis also pointed out widening quality disparities due to the uneven rollout of advanced mobile technologies.

For the first time, the ITU provided an estimate of total 5G subscriptions, now reaching around three billion—roughly one-third of all mobile broadband subscriptions.
