Millions Face Internet Disruptions in 2025
Interruptions particularly struck video-on-demand services, online gaming, and communication platforms, underscoring both the vulnerability and the essential role of digital infrastructure in everyday life.
Because many platforms depend on a limited number of cloud providers and core systems, centralized networks played a decisive role in these breakdowns, triggering cascading interruptions across multiple services simultaneously.
The most significant outage of the year occurred in October, when a malfunction at Amazon Web Services (AWS) disrupted global Internet access, leaving around 17 million users offline. According to data from the Internet speed and quality measurement firm Ookla and outage tracker Downdetector, the issue originated at AWS’s US-EAST server, cutting off access to platforms such as Snapchat, Netflix, and several e-commerce sites for an extended period.
The second-largest disruption happened in February, when internal problems at Sony blocked 3.9 million users from accessing the PlayStation Network — the online backbone for PlayStation — for more than 24 hours.
In November, at least 3.3 million users reported connectivity failures linked to Cloudflare. This third-largest outage of the year lasted about five hours and stemmed from an error in Cloudflare’s core cloud infrastructure.
