China Launches New Batch of Internet Satellites into Orbit
The rocket achieved liftoff at 7:26 a.m. local time (2326GMT Thursday) from the Hainan commercial spacecraft launch facility in Wenchang, situated in the nation's southern island province of Hainan, media reported.
The mission successfully delivered its payloads—the 17th batch of low-Earth-orbit internet satellites—into their designated orbital positions, the report said.
The deployment advances China's ambitions to construct a comprehensive satellite internet network capable of rivaling systems like SpaceX's Starlink, aiming to provide global broadband connectivity from space.
Low-Earth-orbit satellite constellations orbit closer to Earth than traditional communications satellites, enabling faster data transmission speeds and reduced latency for internet services.
China has accelerated its space-based internet infrastructure development, with the Hainan commercial launch site serving as a strategic hub for deploying satellite mega-constellations supporting both civilian and potential military applications.
The Long March-8A represents China's growing launch capabilities, designed specifically for commercial satellite deployment missions requiring cost-effective and frequent launches.
This latest batch brings China closer to establishing comprehensive orbital coverage, positioning Beijing as a major competitor in the emerging space-based internet service market alongside American and European providers.
