State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City holds academic committee meeting to accelerate development of smart city technologies
MACAU, August 24 - The State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City (SKL-IOTSC) at the University of Macau (UM) held the third meeting of its second Academic Committee. During the meeting, committee members reviewed the laboratory’s annual work report and recognised its achievements. They engaged in in-depth discussions and offered recommendations on research directions, talent cultivation, technology transfer, and future development.
The meeting was attended by U U Sang, president of the Administrative Committee of the Science and Technology Development Fund of the Macao SAR; Mei Hong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and chair of the Academic Committee of SKL-IOTSC; Cheng Shijie, Chen Dake, Jin Hongguang, and Li Hui, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Fan Weicheng, Zhang Ping, and Li Keqiang, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Qiao Yu, professor at the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory; and Jin Shi, vice president of Southeast University.
Mei Hong chaired the meeting. Speeches were delivered by U U Sang and Yonghua Song, rector of UM and director of SKL-IOTSC, respectively. In his speech, Song thanked the committee members and experts for their continued support and guidance. He said that, UM had established the Institute of Smart City Technologies based on the resources of SKL-IOTSC, with the aim of fostering collaborative innovation among the government, industry, and academia, and meeting the technological needs of smart city development in Macao and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The institute came into operation on 1 August. Song added that the laboratory will continue to uphold the scientific spirit, focus on major national strategic needs, and strengthen technological innovation and technology transfer in order to support smart city and sustainable development.
U said that, the restructuring of the State Key Laboratories in Macao, the release of the Third Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development of the Macao SAR (2026–2030), and the significant progress of UM’s extension of operations into the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin have created new opportunities for the development of science, technology, and innovation in Macao. According to the Third Five-Year Plan, Macao will prioritise science, technology, and education to deepen Macao-Hengqin integration and promote the high-quality development of the Cooperation Zone, with UM and the State Key Laboratories in Macao playing a pivotal role in this process. U also congratulated Chair Professor Yonghua Song, Distinguished Professor Yuen Ka Veng, and Chair Professor Xu Cheng-Zhong on receiving the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Prize. He remarked that the award not only recognises the awardees’ research prowess but also holds significant importance for enhancing the research impact of both SKL-IOTSC and Macao. Moreover, he expressed hope that the laboratory will continue to pursue excellence, particularly in talent exchange, attraction and cultivation, and the commercialisation of research results, thereby injecting innovative momentum into Macao’s economic diversification.
Ma Shaodan, associate director of SKL-IOTSC, presented a comprehensive report on the laboratory’s development, talent attraction efforts, research achievements, and outlined its future development plans and key priorities. The committee members spoke highly of the laboratory’s accomplishments in technological innovation, talent cultivation, industry-academia collaboration, and open research projects. They further recommended that the laboratory play a proactive role in undertaking major research initiatives, advancing basic and applied research, promoting the commercialisation of research results, and leveraging Macao’s strengths to participate in major national scientific and technological projects.
In his concluding remarks, Ge Wei, vice rector of UM, said that SKL-IOTSC will consider and implement all of the committee’s recommendations, and transform the experts’ insights into concrete measures to drive the laboratory’s high-quality development. He also encouraged all researchers to strengthen their sense of mission and strive for more pioneering, high-impact research, so as to make greater contributions to the high-quality development of the Greater Bay Area and building the country into a science and technology powerhouse.
SKL-IOTSC’s management team and key researchers also attended the meeting. The meeting provided valuable guidance for the laboratory, helping it to refine its research focus, enhance its innovation capabilities, and promote high-quality development.
